Building and launching my own business has been the scariest and most challenging thing I have ever done! And I have done a few scary and challenging things in my life.

This journey has pushed me so far out of my comfort zone that at times all I have wanted to do is give up.

There have been so many times I have asked myself 'why the hell did I start this journey, what was I thinking, this is just so bloody scary, how am I going to get through this'?

I realised pretty early on in my business journey that, in order to keep moving forward, taking action and making progress, I needed to identify and really understand my fears and where they were coming from so that I could work to overcome them. 

I say 'work' to overcome them, because I believe fears (especially the deep seeded fears that have been there from a very young age) never truly go away. Fears are always there in the ego-mind, whispering their limiting beliefs and mad ideas at any moment of weakness.

What I know for sure is, if I don't continue to acknowledge and face my fears every day, they are going to keep holding me back, overpower me and sabotage any chance I have for success.

So, here's what I discovered about my fears when I started to look at them more closely...

My fears include being helpless, vulnerable, trapped and unable to make my own decisions. Basically, my greatest fear is that I will live my life without ever knowing what it feels like to have complete freedom of choice.

Stemming from these fears are my fears of a lack of money, failure, humiliation, lack of achievement, guilt and confrontation.

When looking really closely at my fears, I realised that there were specific moments in my life (mainly from my childhood) that created these fear based thoughts and feelings of lack. Identifying these moments and situations in my past has helped me to understand why I fear the things that I do and where they have come from.

By understanding my fears I'm able to recognise that my fears aren't necessarily a true reflection of my current situation, they are merely a story I have been telling myself because of a past experience.

Recognising my fears and understanding where they have come from gives me a sense of power over my fears and I am able to start working to overcome them.

I thought I'd list my top techniques that I use to help overcome my fears and that also help me to keep a positive mindset. Hopefully these techniques will help you too!

1. Mantras

These are empowering and positive things that I say to myself when I start hearing that whisper of self doubt or limiting belief come through. My fave mantras include:

  • I witness my fears and I choose differently.
  • The universe has my back. All is well and all is coming.
  • I have everything I need to grow a successful business.
  • I am exactly where I need to be at this moment in time.
  • I love and accept myself wholeheartedly and I accept all parts of my journey.
  • I release myself from all pressure and high expectation. I am doing the best I can and that is enough.
  • I do everything with purpose and passion and from a place of love and that is enough.

2. Meditation

My fave meditations to listen to include:

3. Practicing gratitude

At the end of each day, just before I go to sleep I think of at least 3 things I'm grateful for. This helps me to put things into perspective and realise that I already have an amazing life no matter what challenges I'm facing in the present moment.

4. Surrendering my fears to the universe

Sometimes it's really nice to be able to say a prayer and hand over all of my fears to a higher power. It gives me a sense of release and relief in surrendering my fears to something greater than myself and that all will be ok.

5. Listening to audios

Any chance I get I love selecting inspirational audios and videos at random from youtube to listen to.

This is great for when I'm in the car, pushing the pram or doing the vacuuming and cleaning. Listening to the wisdom and advice from great leaders always makes me feel so much better about where I'm at and gives me so much clarity about where I'm headed. My fave youtube videos/audios include anything from:

  • Abraham Hicks

6. Back to nature

Sometimes when things just feel too much and I feel like I'm going a little crazy I like to get out of the house and into nature. I focus on being present in the moment, I listen to the sounds like the wind in the trees or the singing of the birds and smell the smells like the smell of native trees and flowers. It always helps calm my mind and re-energise me.
