GUEST SPEAKER : Kylie Oliver of The Geelong Advertiser will be speaking on a combination of the juggling act that is motherhood and pursuing your passion through your work/business. She can also offer insight into effective ways of gaining editorial coverage in the local media. I graduated from The University of Melbourne with a BA before taking up position as a journalist at the Geelong Advertiser. Did this for 12 years in many and varied roles within the newsroom – about four of those part-time after having two children – now aged 8 and 4. In 2008 I had a career change to pursue something different and established my own business in public relations/marketing, as well as working part-time as the publications co-ordinator for a local private school and also freelance writing for magazines. This worked well in combination with my role as mum to a baby and young child. Last year I returned to the Geelong Advertiser full-time in the role of GT & Magazines Editor where I am responsible for overseeing GT (Geelong Today, a weekly lifestyle magazine each Saturday) and several magazines including Baby & Child, Bride, Home, Education, Our Place and others. I also write the weekly Baby & Child page each Wednesday and manage the Facebook page. I honestly love being able to share stories about the amazing people and happenings in our region.
